As soon as baby’s first teeth appear, they become susceptible to decay. Decay occurs when the teeth are frequently exposed to sugary liquids for long periods, including milk (even breast milk), formula, fruit juice and other sweetened beverages. To fight decay, never allow a baby or toddler to fall asleep with a bottle containing any of these liquids. Start (gently) brushing the teeth with a soft washcloth wrapped around a finger with just water as soon as possible, schedule regular dental visits after the age of two years and guide young children to drink from a cup as soon as they are able.
