If your kids think oral piercing is cool, set them straight! Piercing the lips, tongue, cheeks or uvula (hanging tissue at the back of the throat) can cause a variety of health problems, including serious infections, uneven wearing of tooth enamel, nerve damage, drooling, pain and swelling, scar tissue, gum injuries and more. If your child has already taken the leap, make sure you try to keep the pierced area clean and free of food particles, and regularly seek professional oral hygiene by your dentist. Call a dentist or physician immediately if you see any signs of infection.
